Learn the art of Suminagashi or Japanese paper marbling with Surge: A Geography of Flow artist, Richard Longstreet! Perfect for artists of all ages, learn how to swirl ink to make your own unique designs on paper. Make memories and get creative in this fun intergenerational workshop!
About Suminigashi:
Suminagashi, “floating ink”, is the Japanese term for a practice developed in China about 2000 years ago. In suminagashi, alternating rings of ink and a surfactant (such as ox gall, pine needle resin or dish soap) are floated on water. The image is then manipulated, usually by blowing on it, and transferred to paper.
Date: Saturday, December 12 from 1-2:30pm
Ages: 6 & up (An adult collaborator (parent/caregiver) must be present for those under 16.)
Cost: $55 per adult & child pair // $75 for 1 adult & 2 children (Members get 10% off at check out.)
Location: In-person class in MoNA’s Art Studio.

About Richard Longstreet:
Prior to 1984, I taught at the private art schools of Dorothy Cannon and Dorothy Royer; occasionally guest-teaching in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
After 1984, I taught in the Anacortes School District as Artist in Residence, board member of Anacortes Youth Arts and as a Classroom Teacher.
I then taught in the Seattle School District as an Art Education specialist before retiring in 2026 to concentrate on my own art which can be viewed on my website, richardlongstreetart.com.
Richard is a participating artist in Surge: A Geography of Flow.
How to Register for a Class

MoNA’s Class Cancellation Policy
If MoNA cancels the class, the student has two options:
100% Non-transferable refund
Generously choose to donate the full amount to support MoNA's Education Programs. The student will receive a letter acknowledging their donation for tax purposes.
If the student decides to cancel the class, they have the following options based on timing of cancellation:
Cancels seven days or more before class:
The student has the option of 100% non-transferable refund or can generously choose to donate the full amount to support MoNA's Education Programs. The student will receive a letter acknowledging their donation for tax purposes.
Cancels less than seven days before the class or a no show:
The student is not eligible for a refund. These funds will be considered a generous donation to support MoNA's Education Programs and the student will receive a letter acknowledging their donation for tax purposes.

The facility is wheelchair accessible and an elevator is available in the back of the building

Limited seating is provided throughout the galleries and studio space
Restrooms are available on both floors of the museum. Changing tables are available in the restrooms on the 2nd floor and an all-gender restroom is available on the 1st floor of the museum
