Aprendiendo el lenguaje del arte: Exhibiciรณn de arte de los estudiantes de MoNA Link / Learning the Language of Art: MoNA Link Student Art Exhibition
February 18 - May 14, 2023
Curator: Nicolette Harrington
This exhibition of student art is much more than wonderful pictures on the wall; it is a celebration of the learning and accomplishments of the K-12 students and teachers that participated in the MoNA Link program in 2022 working to integrate art into classroom curriculum using many different art media.
For 20 years, MoNA Link has provided meaningful art experiences for students by reaching out to the community that surrounds every classroom. MoNA Link enriches lives:
MoNA Link provides professional teacher training in the visual arts, linking museum exhibitions, art skills, and grade level-curriculum.
MoNA Link students visit MoNA twice a year to see new exhibitions, learn new art techniques, and develop the skills to speak and write about art with confidence.
MoNA Link students see the world around them with new eyes as they become active observers and use Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS).
ML teacher training increases the artistic confidence of all people who work with students. Effective art teaching strategies and the language of art are powerful tools to activate the brain to learn. Success depends on knowing about media, methods, processes and concepts of the principles of art, as well as developing skill in talking about and creating art. Shapes, colors, and words alone do not make meaningful works of art. When combining these elements in order to communicate a feeling or idea to others, the simple statement of โthis is what I can doโ transforms to a thought provoking, visual encounter with the artistโs intentions.
The eloquent evidence in this student exhibition speaks volumes about growing minds and their ability to make meaningful work using the language of art.

Ready for the Next Step: Guideposts on the Path of Art Education
These drawings of shoes were created by elementary school students through an observational drawing exercise as an assessment of understanding the elements of art. They illustrate the power of equipping students with the skills they need to be fluent in the language of art. Visitors are invited to draw and add their shoes to the wall!

Gratitude Grid
As evidenced in the Geppettoโs Children: Italo Scanga at Pilchuck Glass School exhibition, mentorship is an essential part of many artistsโ journeys. Visitors were asked to add a note to our gratitude grid to honor someone who has nurtured your creativity.

Visual Thinking Strategies: Learning to Look and Talk About Art
Our MoNA Link program utilizes Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), which is a research-based teaching method that promotes aesthetic development including critical thinking and communication skills. VTS teaches participants to take the time to observe closely, describe what they see in detail and provide evidence for their observations.

Take a look at these textbooks which date back as far as 1860 and imagine what early art education in the United States might have been like. Peer into the pages and see if you can find anything familiar to your early education? Do you see anything that surprises you?
