Exhibition Sponsors support special exhibitions and make possible education and engagement programs, allowing the Museum to enhance the outreach to and impact on our
communities!

In partnership with the Skagit Climate Science Consortium, MoNA is bringing back Surge: Mapping Transition, Displacement, and Agency in Times of Climate Change, an exhibition drawing attention to climate change and its tangible effects on the Northwest’s Coastal communities.

Surge: Mapping Transition, Displacement, and Agency in Times of Climate Change on view October 14, 2023 through February 17, 2024, will engage artists to work with environmental researchers and educators to present the public with new perspectives on issues such as flooding, storm surge, coastal erosion, glacier retreat, through exhibits, lectures, and education programs as well as participatory art activities.

Exhibition Sponsors support special exhibitions and make possible education and engagement programs, allowing the Museum to enhance the outreach to and impact on our communities!  With generous support from the community, we plan to host the following educational activities:

Government & Resiliency Panel: This panel will be facilitated by Skagit Climate Science Consortium representatives. The panel will engage the public and key players in a moderated discussion about how our local government organizations respond to climate change.

Coffee with Surge Artists & Scientists & Open House:  Event is for visitors of all ages to meet informally with Surge artists & scientists over a coffee within the museum galleries.

Artist and Scientist Panel Discussion: Moderated by exhibition guest curator Chloe Dye Sherpe will highlight the voices of selected artists and scientist teams.

Luminary Workshop with Skagit Watershed Council: Visitors will design and decorate a pre-made luminary globe in this free workshop. Luminary globes are round paper lanterns. Instructors from the Skagit Watershed Council will be there to teach about our local ecology and help inspire design concepts. Ages 8+

Artist Lectures: These lectures will highlight the voices of artists like Karen Hackenberg and others who have been visibly working on climate change issues in the PNW for years.

Padilla Bay Marine Life Art Activity: Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in an art project inspired by the Surge exhibition and the local ecology in Skagit County.

Teen Art Club: Teen Art Club is a free, monthly program for youth in Grades 6-12. Youth are invited to the MoNA Art Studio to express their creativity and inspire new art pieces. Snacks, drinks, and art supplies are provided.
